Q. What is the best way to maintain my stainless steel?
A. It's hard to believe that a surface designed to withstand the rigors of professional use can be harmed because the surface seems so solid and substantial. Even the toughest looking kitchen appliances need special attention and TLC.
Stainless steel is actually very porous and attracts fingerprints, spills, and other contaminants quite easily. It will even absorb the cleaning products you use to maintain it. NEVER use chlorine on your stainless steel - it will leave black streaks and ruin your finish. The best method for cleaning is simply using a mild pH balanced solution, free of acids found in many cleaning solutions such as vinegar, citric acid (often found in orange cleaners) or bleach. Another no-no is using abrasive cleaning products such as scouring pads, steel wool or plastic scouring brushes as they will ruin the finish on your surface.
First off, shine (don't scrub!) your stainless steel. There are many products on the market for cleaning stainless steel surfaces including sprays and wipes. Absent these products, you can use a mild soap and water solution and a very soft rag such as a microfiber rag or soft cloth diaper.
Wipe in the direction of the grain on the surface, avoiding the natural tendency to arc your stroke with each wipe. For stronger streaks and stuck-on messes, use a soft sponge moistened with water and a little baking soda or Barkeeper's Friend, remembering to use gentle strokes going with the grain. Less is more...so be cautious when scrubbing. Always follow your manufacturers recommendations for your particular appliance. If you have lost or misplaced your instructions, you can Google your appliance information and download your instructions through the manufacturer's website.
Your final step is to leave a streak-free finish, free of fingerprints and debris. Once all surfaces have been disinfected and cleaned, simply take a dab of lemon oil (we recommend Holloway House or Weiman's) on a microfiber rag and smooth it lightly over your entire surface. This will not only shine your appliance but it will repel future fingerprints, stuck-on food, and allow your appliance to have a natural shine. With proper maintenance and care, your stainless steel will last for many years!
Q. What is the best way to keep my oven clean?
A. Two important things to remember: Avoid foil and commercial oven cleaners!
Never line the bottom of your oven with foil. It reduces the air flow, sometimes even blocking it, and making the oven less efficient over time. You will not have the cooking results you expect. Although considered a time-saver, it is recommended that you avoid using foil at all.
Commercial oven cleaners used on continuous or self-cleaning ovens will harm the finish of the oven, even voiding the manufacturers warranty.
Tailored Maid Services uses a process that is free of toxins, fumes, and is all-natural and safe for all oven surfaces. We use a gentle scrubbing mixture and lots of elbow grease. For oven racks, we use a natural pumice stone and water to make them new again. Feel free to call us for a free estimate on your oven cleaning. We are glad to help.
Q. How do I clean my cutting board or butcher block?
A. After using a mild detergent and water, pat dry with a soft cloth (microfiber is best). Leaving the wood damp or wet will stain the wood. Never use bleach on your cutting board, as this surface is porous and will contaminate your food. Simply rub a lemon across the area to disinfect and santize, which is safe for all food surfaces.
Q. What is the best way to clean the shower? I use a bleach based cleaner. I am trying to use safe and effective cleaners because all of my family is sensitive to harsh cleaners. I live in Australia and I really need to know how to do the cleaning properly. Thanks in advance.
A. Thank you for your inquiry. I am more than happy to help. We appreciate seeing an Aussie on our site!
First off, what is the shower surface made of? This will determine the proper way to clean. Some natural stone (marble, granite, limestone, etc.) must be cared for with delicate products. Bleach will ruin such surfaces. It will also ruin stainless steel, so it is best to avoid bleach-based products in your home.
For the typical fiberglass shower or porcelain tub, I recommend “Barkeeper’s Friend”. The active ingredient is rhubarb powder. Although it is classified as an abrasive, it is extremely mild and is safe for most surfaces. It cuts cleaning time down significantly and provides excellent results. No fumes, no toxins…just good old fashioned cleaning.
For special surfaces such as natural stone, I recommend using a pH neutral cleaner obtained from your local stone care business. You can also find many options on the internet. We use Aromalogics “Simplicity” Granite Mist. If you visit www.aromalogics.com you can order it directly. In addition, I have a link on my website to conveniently order this product.
Thank you for your submission. I hope we have been of assistance and wish you happy cleaning!
