SMALL COMPANY CHANGING LIVES ONE AT A TIME
Local Tidewater Maid Service Offering Options to Community That Change Many Lives; Cancer Patients, Wounded Vets, Animals, Military Families, Senior Citizens,
and Displaced Homemakers Benefit In Many Ways
October 27, 2007--Newport News, VA
Tailored Maid Services has joined forces with a variety of local and national non-profit organizations to assist many of our local citizens. Additionally, they have gone above and beyond the industry standard by integrating their own incentive programs with innovative ideas to reach out to more of our community in need.
Tailored Maid Services was founded by Torrey Shannon and her now-famous husband, SSG John Daniel Shannon, in 2007. Tailored Maid Services is a local maid service specializing in all-natural, non-toxic residential aromatherapy cleaning, with two offices based at the City Center in Oyster Point in the city of Newport News as well as in Northeast Suffolk.
Torrey's husband, also known as "Dan", is known as the "Face Of Walter Reed" after appearing on the front page of the Washington Post releasing the story about the scandal at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC, in February, 2007. Since then, Torrey and Dan have been active in fighting to secure access to better soldier care for veterans and their families. After suffering a gunshot wound to the head and other injuries in Iraq in 2004, SSG Shannon testified before Congress in March, 2007 and appeared once again on the front page of the Washington Post in September, 2007 to follow up on the lack of care within the Department of Defense (DoD) and Veteran's Administration (VA) systems. Pending his retirement due to service-connected combat injuries, Torrey and Dan put down roots in the Tidewater community to start making a difference in other ways.
Simple solutions to cater to the community include discounts for veterans, senior citizens discounts, and military discounts. However, Tailored Maid Services decided that this was not enough to "give back" to the community.
Participating with professional organizations with programs such as "Cleaning For Cancer" which cater to women going through breast cancer treatments by offering free or reduced-cost house cleaning, the choice to participate was clear: It's more than giving a cancer patient a clean house. For the recipient, it gives the precious gift of time. Tailored Maid Services chose this organization realizing how difficult it is for women to care for their family and homes while undergoing such difficult and exhausting treatments. Torrey Shannon of Tailored Maid Services explains, "Our products are very natural and non-toxic, which makes even more of a positive impact for the homeowner during her treatment. If we can give her a valuable commodity of time and recuperation, we are giving her a gift that is more precious than any other gift one can imagine. To give this with such care and concern for her health and safety means more to us than ever."
Even Tailored Maid employees benefit from being on the Tailored Maid team. All employees have been carefully screened and individually trained to give them the necessary skills to move into the workforce after being displaced. Candidates such as transient military wives, young single mothers, or those escaping abusive relationships and starting their lives over are now working productively for the company and feeling good about their ability to make a difference for themselves and for others. The paid training allows them to get on-the-job training at no cost, while management integrates life skills to carry them forward for a new lease on life. One employee states, "This is a family-oriented business, and it's catered to my needs as a mother. I love my job and I look forward to each day that I can come to work and learn more each day." From the first day on the job, the trainees' rate of pay is higher than what local competitors pay their seasoned employees, and start-up items such as shoes and uniforms are provided. Even transportation is arranged if necessary. The employees enjoy perks such as gift certificates for trips to a local "Best Of" beauty salon or paid time off to tend to family obligations. The employees often enjoy company get-togethers with management such as company meetings at local restaurants, weekend barbeques, and attend many local events together as a team.
The benefits of Tailored Maid Services also extend to our four-legged, feathered and furry friends. As a pet-friendly maid service, Tailored Maid Services caters to the community by attending local events and joining national organizations for fund raising. Additionally, they strictly adhere to the use of pet-friendly products and cleaning techniques that are not harmful to animals. With each home visit, they bring treats to the animals of all shapes and sizes. Most maid services require the pet owners to crate or quarantine their pets during a cleaning; whereas, with Tailored Maid Services, they encourage the homeowner to allow the pet to have free access to the home and interact with the pet freely during their visits. The local and national fund raising events help keep the business commitment toward animals in perspective, but the dedication to the animals come from the interaction with each client and their very own pets.
Tailored Maid Services has a commitment that comes from experience. "I know what it is like to be a single mother, to live in a battered women's shelter, to live in a homeless shelter, to start life over, to have no time for family, and to not feel valued as an employee." explains Torrey Shannon. "Dan and I have been married for a long time and we've spent most of that time together as a military family. I have survived long deployments and lived the military life. I understand it. Dan and I have three beautiful children now, and we work hard to give them our time. We want to give that gift of time to other families who don't have enough time in their day to clean their homes so they can attend soccer games, to cook dinner, and have sit-down meals together." She adds: "We want our employees to feel valued and be self-sustaining and have the life skills to restart their own lives after life-altering changes. And most importantly, we are committed to serving our community and making a difference in a larger scale and cover a larger spectrum. It's who we are."
